Delaware MapThe Delaware Department of Public Health is reporting that syphilis cases in the area among gay men is increasing.  76 cases in total of syphilis were reported to the Health Department in 2011.

Almost all of these new cases were among gay men and the majority of these coming from New Castle County. Experts are seeing cases of syphilis increasing in New York, Miami, San Francisco, and Chicago meaning this could be a rising trend nationwide.


Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is very common in the United States. Syphilis is called “the great imitator” because many of the signs and symptoms of Syphilis are difficult to differentiate from other diseases. Syphilis is passed from person to person through direct skin contact with a syphilis sore.
